Disclaimer

Everything on EnergyCalcHQ is published for general information and education. It is written carefully and checked against the standards it names, and it is not a substitute for the judgement of a qualified engineer who has seen your installation.

The calculators are a starting point, not a design

Each calculator applies a stated formula to the values you type in. It does not know your site. It has not seen the ambient temperature in your ceiling void, the six other circuits sharing your conduit, the condition of the supply at your incomer, or the equipment you have actually bought.

Every result therefore rests on assumptions, and each tool states its own on the page beneath it. A number produced here should be treated as a first pass to be verified, never as a value to build from directly. Cable sizes, breaker ratings, earth conductor cross-sections and fault levels all require confirmation against the current edition of the applicable standard and the manufacturer's data for the specific product being installed.

Reference data is representative

Current ratings, derating factors, resistivity values, k factors and the various tables reproduced across the site are representative figures drawn from published standards. Real products vary. Two cables of the same nominal size from two manufacturers can carry different ratings, and a datasheet supersedes anything here.

Standards are also revised. A page written against one edition may not reflect an amendment issued afterwards, and codes differ by jurisdiction — the arrangement that satisfies IS 732 in India is not automatically compliant under BS 7671, NEC or AS/NZS 3000. Where a page names a clause, check that the clause still says what the page says it does.

Electrical work is dangerous

Nothing on this site is authorisation to carry out electrical work. Installation, testing, alteration and commissioning must be done by a person competent and, where the law requires it, licensed to do so, and the single line diagrams produced by the generator are unstamped planning drawings rather than approved construction documents.

If you are not qualified to do the work, engage somebody who is. If you are, the responsibility for the design remains yours — reading a result on this site does not transfer any part of it.

Advertising and external links

This site carries third-party advertising, which is what pays for the hosting. Those advertisements are selected and served by Google and its partners, not chosen by us, and their appearance is not a recommendation of the advertiser, the product or the claims made in the advertisement. How that advertising uses cookies is described in the privacy policy.

The same applies to outbound links. Where a page links to a standards body, a manufacturer or another publication, it does so because the material is relevant. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or their accuracy.

No professional relationship

Reading this site, using a calculator or writing to us does not create an engineering, consulting or professional relationship. We cannot check or approve a design, and we do not accept instructions to do so.

We do read corrections, and we act on them. If a calculator returns a wrong number or a page states something inaccurate, please tell us through the contact page — with the inputs you used and the result you expected, so it can be reproduced.

Liability

The position set out in the terms of use applies in full: the site is provided as-is, and to the fullest extent permitted by law we accept no liability for loss or damage arising from use of, or reliance on, anything published here. Nothing in this disclaimer excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
